This month sees Michael head off on his annual Vision Aid Overseas trip. As many of our patients know, Michael is a regular volunteer with the charity and 2016 marks his 16th consecutive year with them. This time he is travelling to Ethiopia, where he will be leading a team of fellow Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians. Whilst there, the team will be examining and treating patients as well as training local staff to continue their work after they have gone. In addition to improving vision by providing spectacles, the team will also help to diagnose and treat eye conditions, such as cataracts and glaucoma.
These trips provide life changing eye care services in places where help is often out of reach. The charity aims to help some of the poorest people in the world gain better sight, giving not only hope but better education and job prospects to many. Additionally, the charity helps to provide training for local people and supported the creation of two university Optometry courses in Ethiopia alone.
If you would like to help support Vision Aid Overseas visit their website, .visionaidoverseas.org or call into the practice to find out more. We also recycle glasses for the charity so if you do have a few pairs around that you no longer use bring them in next time you’re passing. We’ll make sure they go to a good home.
